Salary comparison FAQs

Why does the same salary take home different amounts in different states?

State income tax rates and structures vary enormously — nine states have none at all, while others have progressive brackets reaching over 10%. Some states also add employee-paid disability or family-leave insurance premiums on top. Federal tax and FICA stay the same everywhere; only the state-level piece changes.

Does this account for cost of living?

No — this compares take-home pay only, not purchasing power. A higher take-home amount in one state doesn't necessarily go further if housing and other costs are also higher there.
