Michigan paycheck FAQs

How does the MI-W4 exemption reduce my withholding?

Each exemption you claim on your MI-W4 (yourself, spouse, and dependents) shelters $5,900 of annual wages from the 4.25% tax in 2026. The total is subtracted from your wages before the rate applies.

Does this calculator include Detroit's city income tax?

Not yet. Detroit and roughly two dozen other Michigan cities (including Grand Rapids, Lansing, and Flint) levy their own local income tax on residents and, in some cases, nonresidents who work there. Rates and rules vary by city, so we show state tax only and flag the omission rather than guess a rate.

Is Michigan's flat tax rate ever different?

The rate has fluctuated slightly in recent years due to a state revenue trigger that can temporarily lower it when general fund revenue growth exceeds inflation. For 2026 it's back to the standard 4.25%.
