New York paycheck FAQs
Do I pay New York City tax if I work in NYC but live outside it?
No. Since 1999 the NYC personal income tax applies only to city residents. A New Jersey or Westchester commuter working in Manhattan pays New York State tax but not the city tax — residency, not work location, decides it.
What are the PFL and DBL lines on my New York pay stub?
Paid Family Leave (0.432% of gross wages in 2026, capped at $411.91/year) funds up to 12 weeks of paid leave; DBL is the state's original disability benefit, costing at most $0.60 per week. Both are employee-paid insurance premiums, though some employers absorb the DBL.
Did New York taxes change for 2026?
Yes — 2026 legislation cut rates in the lower brackets (the first bracket fell from 4.0% to 3.9%), and the state reissued its withholding tables effective January 1, 2026. This calculator uses the reissued NYS-50-T-NYS (1/26) tables.
